I've been so absent I apologise. I'm currently studying a postgrad in I.T, working two jobs and juggling life whilst trying to find time to improve and work on my music.<br />
<br />
But I'm excited, I purchased my first bass guitar! I'm so in love with it even though I've little knowledge of how to use it (Like all my other instruments).<br />
<br />
It's so beautiful to hold and the quality of how it sounds on Ableton has left me feeling really exciting for some future Sunn O))), Godspeed and Russian Circles influenced work.<br />
<br />
I'm still frantically trying to work on an album.<br />

<br />
My latest track, Soms.<br />
<br />
This piece is inspired by Yann Tiersen, Ludovico Einaudi and general soundtrack music. It was mainly written after lots of improvised playing on Ableton. I feel amazed sometimes what I come out with messing around. When I feel sad or alone, I tend to feel like I can have a conversation with music. I feel like the music communicates my feelings back to me, as if we're both conversing about whatever is upsetting me and I find it comforting in that moment. I guess that's how I lose hours to Ableton.<br />
<br />
This track is trying to express thinking with worry. It's inspired by those moments you might be sat on a train/bus, looking out the window, watching the world pass you by whilst you contemplate something troubling you. In my case I spend a lot of time thinking about something I miss. Knowing at the time when I was the happiest I'd ever been I always had this uneasy feeling at the pit of my stomach that it was temporary. I guess though when you think about it, everything in life is temporary, even life itself. I guess it has become a security barrier for me now, to view everything as temporary, thus limiting the amount of dependency or want of closeness to anything.<br />
<br />
I feel like I created a slightly unsettling thinking tone in this track, I hope you feel the same.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00177720773431210417noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2496838292577718963.post-34274671151649171742016-08-03T17:29:00.000-07:002016-08-03T17:29:15.678-07:00Vaarvel EU<iframe frameborder="no" height="450" scrolling="no" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/270652477&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%"></iframe><br />
<br />
Hi all.<br />
<br />
I recorded this improvised piano piece on the morning of the EU vote result, I hadn't gotten around to sharing it on my blog yet.<br /><br />I, like many millions of people was deeply upset by the result. I spent a lot of the morning crying in shock. Not just for what I will most likely in terms of identity, freedom of movement etc but also for the lack of protection for those who need it. I feel saddened that so many Vote Leave campaigns were driven by fear and many (not all) voted leave out of fear of what the campaigns drill into you. There's not enough out there about the way in which many poor people are exploited, especially illegal immigrants. They're at risk of being sexually abused, working unpaid, I just get upset imagining.<br /><br />On the morning of the result I felt a great sense of loss. It took me back to a feeling I had towards the end of last year/beginning of this year when I lost the most important thing in my life. It reminded me of how I feel like the upset and loss I feel from that even will affect me for the rest of my life, similarly to how the EU leave will affect my life.<br /><br />I hope the emotion of loss comes across in this track. I may choose to include it in my album I am working on and perhaps change the title to "Vaarvel" on the album to apply to the broader feeling of loss. I just feel it's important to know when this piece was made and its initial reason for existence.<br />
<br />

I just want to share some of my current favourite pieces from video games which I have been listening to and feel inspired by.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Last Of Us - Main Menu Theme. I love how bleak and gritty this piece of music sounds, I actually by chance figured out part of the melody whilst playing around on my new guitar.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gcnLYrxLlhU" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
Whilst I can't play the game yet, I am thoroughly enjoying this soundtrack. This particular track, 'Loss' from 'I Am Setsuna' reminds me of 'The Sixth Station' track from Ghibli's 'Spirited Away'.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cQ5S0ruCceU?list=PLC5JSvEMh3aYEcU67xeXZpuTwyga9Ojg5" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
Undertale! Something about this track 'Shop' makes me feel really safe and cosy inside, again reminds me of music I'd expect to find in a Ghibli soundtrack, noticing a theme here?<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jCQ_5Gj6jlg" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
Please Don't Touch Anything. This game has to be one of the best games I've ever played in my life, I've never had my mind blown so much in a 3 hour sitting. To top off the amount of effort and care which went into crafting this beautiful point and click game it also has a wonderful soundtrack. I find it hard to pick a favourite as they all vary so much from one another. I have a feeling I could take influence from this style quite well as I feel like it consists of more simple yet layered melodies and places more of a focus on the sound of the synth, I assume through the use of plug-ins and reverb. Hopefully I can produce a piece in this style in the near future!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HWbE2mz68ZE?list=PLOxlis5hqA0HUNoONh8MRMroOMlngDW8D" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Stellaris! I'm yet to properly invest time into this game, my PS4 arrived on the day of Stellaris' release so I've had a lot of games to play recently, alongside moving flats, alongside working, alongside making music. I am really in love with this soundtrack though, especially from around 2:20 onwards, it creates a real sense of mystery and tension for me and reminds me of Mass Effect.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rzLj5RwmMLY" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Finally I'm really loving the soundtrack to The Division. I feel like it contains some Hans Zimmer influences and again makes for a somewhat emotional soundtrack. I feel like the soundtrack helps to set this apart from other first person shooters.<br />

<br />
<br />
Hello all! Terribly sorry a lack of recent music releases and updates, I've been moving flats the past two months whilst working full time hours so have found most of my time being swallowed up.<br />
<br />
I released a track on Soundcloud a few months ago titled 'Ontsnappen / Vinden' (Escape / Find). I took influence from Christian Loffler and Tim Hecker, trying to recreate a haunting atmosphere whilst also including my electric guitar in the hope of creating a more post-rock sound. The chords used in this piece are actually the same as in my previous post <a href="http://nzomusic.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/working-on-sad-piano-piece.html">'Working On A Sad Piano Piece'</a> just with different effects and synths.<br />
<br />
As I mentioned on my Soundcloud, I hope for this piece of music to become part of a bigger project. I am trying to work on my first album, which is a challenge when you work a lot and also get tempted to make different styles of music each time you open up Ableton.<br />
<br />
I'm trying to create an album which communicates the themes of loss, loneliness and memories. I'm trying to use the same chords in each track I make so there is a recurring melody in each piece to place emphasis on circling emotions and inability to let go. I also want the chord progressions to be very pleasing to listen to, in the hope that anyone who listens begins to notice a trend in each piece and looks forward to the next track so they can hear a similar melody again. This for me would communicate memories and missing a person.<br />
<br />
Anyway for anyone who missed it hear is Ontsnappen / Vinden. I'm pretty overwhelmed by the positive response it has received, so thank you!<br />
<br />

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSyv85zifUg/VrQgTB1Q37I/AAAAAAAADYo/cCOPa5BN538/s1600/lastfm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="277" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSyv85zifUg/VrQgTB1Q37I/AAAAAAAADYo/cCOPa5BN538/s640/lastfm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been a bit unwell recently and feeling exhausted from work so haven't been able to make huge progress on any music making in the past week.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fortunately I can still do a lot of listening when I feel under the weather, according to my LastFM I've done a lot of listening over the last 7 days, considering I've been at work/out/sleeping.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For myself personally, I find music listening not just therapeutic and comforting but also productive, I get inspired and listen to different effects and methods of production which I think can help in my own development when attempting to make music.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think I'll make this a weekly thing to post my top listened artists on LastFM, if nothing else it's just a cool thing to share I guess and might give you guys a better insight to my inspiration. (On that note feel free to add me on LastFM: HOGGSofWAR )</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u>DEFTONES - 312 PLAYS</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yeah so, I don't know how I missed the Deftones, I only started listening to them in the past week or two after being introduced to them. I found myself hooked to the White Pony album, it has some nostalgic element to it which reminds me of my teenage years, trying to zone out of my situations at school whilst listening to music. It has that angsty mood to it, yet gives you really positive vibes when listening. It feels like a great album for when you're feeling down but don't want to have those feelings exaggerated in your mind by the music, if that makes sense?<br />
<br />
My favourite track so far has been:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4BKtB_rinh0" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<b><u><br /></u></b>
<b><u>65DAYSOFSTATIC - 152 PLAYS</u></b><br />
<br />
I discovered 65Daysofstatic back in 2010 I believe. I didn't really listen to them much during 2014 or 2015, so I've been revisiting to remind myself why I love them so much. It's going to take me a while to work my way through their discography again, but I'm excited about it. I've been playing Prisms a lot, it's a style I'd be keen to experiment with once I've finished my current projects.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lMp3hovjQyQ" width="560"></iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<b><u>MOGWAI - 117 PLAYS</u></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Mogwai, again I began listening to around 6 years ago. I was out the other night and a track from Mogwai's 'Rave Tapes' album played in the bar (One perk of Bristol bars, you quite often get to enjoy your favourite music.) and I listened to the album again as soon as I could. I then revisited 'Come on die young' which I have found really inspiring listening. It's really encouraging me to experiment more with guitars in my music, even though I can't yet play the guitar. I really hope I get some time to learn at least basic chords on my guitar soon. This has been a Mogwai track I've been enjoying a lot recently.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WwNIkqQnxr4" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
<b><u>UNKLE - 76 PLAYS</u></b><br />
<br />
One of my favourites. I discovered Unkle back in 2007, so I was around 15 or 16. The first album I actually heard from Unkle was their 2007 release, 'War Stories' which I was just overwhelmed by, in particular with tracks like 'Restless' featuring Josh Homme and 'Burn My Shadow' with Ian Astbury, also 'Broken' & 'Keys To The Kingdom' with Gavin Clark who sadly passed away in February 2015.<br />
<br />
I had been so obsessed with War Stories for years that I hadn't given as much attention to other wonderful albums such as 'Never Never Land' and of course, 'Psyence Fiction' which I've invested a lot of listening time in recently. I really love 'Inside' from Unkle's 'Never Never Land' because of the quote it samples from the film, 'Jacob's Ladder'.<br />
<br />
Unkle tracks I've been listening to repetitively the past week are:<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1pwCgBhvck8" width="420"></iframe>
In the Lonely Soul track, I am completely hooked on the style transition at 4:59, in which the strings completely change the emotion of the track. I find this incredibly inspiring for my attempts at making music which can hopefully communicate any of my inner sad feelings. I do find the construction of this entire track pretty hypnotic for the journey it takes you on.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SQxKBY_mZHg" width="420"></iframe>
<br />
Finally Unkle ft Moby has been another piece I have felt immersed by. I'm really interested in the idea of sampling film or radio quotes to a piece of music to see what emotions I can trigger in my listeners.<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm only going to share these tracks for now, otherwise I'll be writing a very long (and probably quite meaningless) post. Hope this is a cool way for you to make some new discoveries maybe, or connect with my taste? If anyone is even reading this at all... Enjoy!<br />

One of my discoveries of 2015 was Christian Löffler who has become one of my favourite electronic musicians. He creates wonderful layering of dark melodies and captures my love of dark techno/house music. I quite often find myself listening to his music on repeat late at night, like right now, at 3:30am... ha!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my last post I shared a sad piano piece I'd been working on. I am still pursuing that project along with a few others but recently I've been going out with my music loving friends to various techno/dance gigs and I've been feeling inspired to try working on a style of music I haven't attempted yet.<br />
<br />
I thought Christian Löffler would be an ideal person to take inspiration from for my attempt at dark ambient techno music. When I listen to Löffler I feel like he creates simple melodies and places more emphasis on the creation of the sound/sample to produce the melody with and from there just adds layers. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At this stage I haven't made any drum patterns/sequences and have just focussed on attempt to create haunting sounds and looping a melody whilst adding layers for emphasis. I have also used the same melody and simply adjusted a few effects, for example adding a 'Dynamic Tube' audio effect to make the core melody sound deeper at 22 seconds into this piece. I'm finding it pretty fun to focus on adjusting sound. I'll hopefully get a chance to use Ableton Push to work on a drum sequence over the next few days and shall post my progress. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is my attempt at taking inspiration from Löffler so far:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyeyt4T_FbmOv02is3nja9FNpQYhdUQd89n9FQTsoWJBbAROBg8W5M1Eg9OhhqgEC_yelXKgYc-WsxAnNtgXw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I'm taking inspiration, I'll share what a few of my favourite Löffler tracks have been:</div>

I find all of these to have a somewhat haunting and sad sound, which I feel really connected to and hope to eventually reflect in my own music one day. Another thing I notice with a lot of his music is the use of crackles and ambient noise, which adds a grainy texture to the tracks, so I'll experiment with recording sounds, turning them into samples and adding various effects.</div>

Hello!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm realising it's going to be hard to title each of these posts to sound unique if I post regular content on my progress, oh well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been trying to teach myself about chords recently, in particular sus chrods (suspended chords). I've realised how much of an impact these chords can have on adding a sad mood to a melody.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I initially set out to attempt my first piece of music using vocals however, I'm still undecided as I'm worried I could ruin the melody I have started to make.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's a quick recording of my progress so far on my latest track, I spent around 10-15 hours improvising with various chords and timescales, eventually creating this short and simple, yet hopefully impactful melody. This is only really the beginning point for me to work with for my next track so this will probably amount to the longest time I've spent making a piece of music, hopefully it will be reflected in the finished product.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hi</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my first post on my swanky music blog.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started to learn Ableton alongside playing my midi keyboard, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and Ableton Push in 2015. I've been uploading music to Soundcloud for around a year now and thought it would be beneficial to have somewhere to store my thoughts, ideas, inspiration and progress.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It could be a cool way for you to discover new music, or see new projects I'm working on. Equally if ever I need to show my process for a university interview or potential collaboration this could help with keeping all of my work organised in one place.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
By no means do I consider myself a musician or professional in any way, I know I have so much to learn and I often feel unsatisfied with my own work once I return to listening to the artists who inspire me so much.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anywho, I hope you get some enjoyment from my blog if you wind up following my musical journey.</div>
